Role of Psychiatric Disorders and Diabetes Distress in Diabetes Self-care Behaviour of Adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
- Gender-based Behaviours: Men reported higher adherence to exercise routines, while women demonstrated better blood-glucose monitoring. However, women experienced higher levels of psychiatric symptoms, including depression and anxiety.
- Age-specific Patterns: Older individuals (61-87 years) were more consistent in maintaining dietary, blood-glucose testing and exercise regimens, whereas younger groups (20-45 years) exhibited higher interpersonal and regimen-related distress.
Patients with severe diabetes showed greater engagement in blood-glucose testing but reported higher emotional and regimen-related distress. This highlights the dual burden of managing disease severity while coping with psychological strain.
- Emotional distress and psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive tendencies, negatively impacted dietary management but positively influenced blood-glucose monitoring.
- Somatization, or physical manifestations of psychological distress, was linked to poor dietary habits but increased adherence to glucose testing routines.
Age, duration of diabetes, and medication adherence emerged as significant predictors of effective self-care practices. For instance:
- Dietary Management: Strongly associated with older age and longer duration of diabetes.
- Blood-Glucose Testing: Positively correlated with disease severity, higher body mass index, and elevated blood pressure.
- General and Specific Diet: Age and duration of diabetes emerged as significant predictors. Older individuals and those with longer disease durations exhibited better adherence to dietary recommendations.
- Exercise: Age was the primary predictor of exercise behavior.
- Blood Glucose Testing: This critical self-care activity was significantly influenced by age and diabetes distress.
